さっぱり

1 〔清潔ですっきり〕

●さっぱりした clean; neat and tidy

・さっぱりした身なりをしている be neatly dressed [turned out].

●ひげを剃って, ぼうぼう頭をさっぱりさせたら, なんだ, いい男ではないか. You've had a shave, had your messy hair neatly trimmed, and see, you look great!

2 〔あっさり〕

●さっぱりした 〔性格の〕 frank; openhearted; 〔味の〕 plain; simple

・気性がさっぱりしている have a frank, open personality

・さっぱり味 a light, simple taste

・今日は暑いからさっぱりしたものが食べたい. As it's hot today, I'd like to eat something simple (and not too strong).

3 〔すっきり〕

●さっぱりする 〔爽やかになる〕 feel refreshed; 〔気が楽になる〕 feel relieved.

●冷たい水で顔を洗えばさっぱりするよ. Washing your face in cold water will refresh you [spruce you up].

・〔シャワーを浴びて〕 ああ, さっぱりした! Ah, that's better! | That was refreshing!

・言いたいことを言ってしまったのでさっぱりした. Now (that) I have had my say, I feel better for it.

4 〔すっかり〕 entirely; altogether; completely.

●きれいさっぱり(と) nicely and cleanly; totally

・きれいさっぱりあきらめる give 《it》 up totally; be completely resigned to one's lot

・きれいさっぱり縁を切る make a clean break 《with…》; entirely break off 《with…》; be entirely through 《with…》.

●昔のことはさっぱり(と)忘れてしまった. I've completely [《口》 clean] forgotten how things used to be.

・さっぱり彼から便りがない. I have heard nothing from him.

・あの人はこのごろさっぱり見えません. I have seen nothing of him lately.

6 〔まったくだめだ･まったくない〕 not [nothing] at all.

●「どうだい, 最近客足は」「いやあ, さっぱりだね」 “How's business?” ―“Terrible. Not much is happening at all.”

・このごろは(息子からの)電話もさっぱりだ. 何してるやら. Not a phone call from him recently. I wonder what's up.
